On Thursday 21st of January, the musician David X offered a concert to refugees and asylum seekers in our drop-in café.

David is an amazing human beatboxer, a one-man band, able to transform his voice into an entire drum-kit, plus thumping bass and soaring vocal line. With only his hands, cupped over his mouth, he can build up an entire dance track and pass on a phenomenal amount of energy.

David knew that it would be challenging to share his art with people overwhelmed by daily worries, living in dramatic uncertainty and stress, but with his natural kindness, humour and generosity, he successfully delivered an overjoyed, vibrant performance! The café vibrated at the rhythm of inspired guitar melodies, percussions and creative vocal tones produced by David X, a one-man orchestra and dancer.

“I prepared my performance a few days prior. I knew that I would have to perform in front of people from different cultures, different nationalities. I wanted to make sure that the musical themes and words would be understood and that they would captivate the audience… that they would have an impact.”

The key to David’s performance is interactivity with the public and its participation. “Let’s create music together” could be his tagline.

“Normally I am not really an outgoing person but after few minutes I was clapping and singing. It was good way to escape from our daily problems.”  said F

Everybody praised the centre for organizing such a great event. But let’s hear it from the centre users themselves:

“David is really a nice guy, the atmosphere in the café was great. People were enthusiastic. The concert gave me positive energy.” JC.

“It’s amazing what a single person can achieve. It’s a lesson for me. We very often ask for others’ assistance but we should also learn more how to do things by ourselves.” D.

“After 3 songs, unfortunately, I had to leave because I had to go to my appointment. I was really sorry for I was having such a nice time. This chap (David) is very nice and enthusiastic. A big thank you.”
